Here are some tips to keep in mind when submitting your site to directories:

1. Avoid directories that use redirected links. These links do not point directly to your domain and usually do not pass pagerank.
2. Try to submit your site to top level categories, these pages generally have a higher page rank than the deeper pages.
3. Many directories create a 'details' page for your link and use your link text as the page title. This page may be in direct competition to your website so you may want to consider using alternative text.
4. Make sure you use keywords in your links that you want your website to rank better for in search engines; backlink keywords & phrases play a large part in SERP's.
5. Try to determine where your link will appear in the directory; some directories sort listings alphabetically and you may want to use link text that places your link on the first page rather than the 6th.
6. Avoid backlinks on pages that have more than 100 links. These can be considered as link farms to search engines and could be harmfull to your website.
